2022/2023 Season Update

Welcome to the post-summer when our thoughts are turning to resurrecting our squash games – from just an off-season layoff or perhaps from a much longer hiatus.

Encouragingly, almost all clubs and facilities in our district are operating normally this fall with no restrictions. For this reason, the MA Squash Board is optimistic for the rebound of our successful programs to pre-COVID participation levels and is excited about new initiatives.

Regarding COVID guidelines: MA Squash has been following US Squash COVID protocols. Those protocols, including masking and vaccination requirements, were lifted in March and are now not required to play in our leagues and tournaments. However, government or facility-specific regulations still take precedence over US Squash’s guidelines.

This season let’s look forward to:

A full 2022-23 league season starting in October with the return of all-finals night at Harvard’s Murr Center on Thursday, March 30th, 2023. New this year: an expanded 5.0+ league for players rated 4.50-5.20. Don’t have a club or your club doesn’t have enough players to field a team for your level? Consider playing as a nomad and contact League Chair Lisa Putukian for more information.

Robust draws in our district’s signature events, the Mass State singles and doubles tournaments, with a return to Murr for the singles all-finals night extravaganza in April.

• Resuming the extremely popular MA Squash Junior Round Robin Program on September 25th at Murr. Let Jon Ross know if you’d like information.

• The creation of the Dual County Public School Squash League in the MetroWest area which will be based at SquashWest. Interested in supporting this much needed program? Contact its founder, John Bleuer, for more information.

• The return of Young Professional events for recent grads to socialize and get connected to other young squash players. Yes, there is a vibrant squash world waiting for you after college! Contact Kerstin Gordon to get on the YP list.

• Invading Philly with lots of Boston teams at the Howe Cup, November 4-6. Whatever your level, there’s a place for you on a team in the country’s largest squash event for women. Contact me if you’re interested in playing or for more information.

• The return of Women’s Squash Nights at Murr. Boston’s annual fall gathering  for Women’s Squash Week is the best attended of the many events around the country and showcases the enthusiasm of the area’s women’s squash community. Register here for the free event on September 29th.

• A new national team tournament created by US Squash. Create your own team (club, friends, coed or single gender, mixed skills or same) and head on down to Philly to play at the Arlen Specter Squash Center, April 28-30, 2023.

And finally, I look forward to hearing from you. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with your ideas, feedback or suggestions about how MA Squash can serve you and the district better.
