The women’s hybrid 2.5/3.5+ league is off to a terrific start and can easily boast (pun-intended) about being the most competitive league in Massachusetts this year. There are a measly 17 points between the team at the top of the standings and the team currently at the bottom on our list of eight teams. (By comparison, all of the Open leagues and the 50+ league have point differentials of 25-37.) Any one of the women’s teams can end up the victor at this point.
We also can boast a 90% participation rate, with 76 of the 84 women on the rosters having played at least once so far.
We field five per team weekly, and 57% of the matches played to date have resulted in a 3-2 split. None of the three sweeps have involved a defaulted match, and no team has won more than once with a full sweep.
SquashBusters has a team in the mix after a five year hiatus – welcome back!
Sixteen players are undefeated at the midpoint; two strong players are rumored to be moving permanently to courts in other states (definitely our loss and their gain); and one charming squash fanatic has come back thrice from New York to play with us (her new husband may not have realized how seriously addictive squash can be)!
We take our socializing seriously and will have round robins and a strokes/lets/turns demo at the women’s league social on Wednesday, January 14. It’s an event not to be missed!
Overall, the women are playing lots of squash and figuring out how to make the match-ups fun yet fair…which will keep us all wondering which team will prevail up until the very end of the season.
