Harvard University’s Murr Center was a busy and noisy place on Thursday, April 9, as the final matches of the 2015 singles championships were contested in 24 divisions. Hundreds of fans were on hand to cheer on their on their favorites and witness some great matches in the most competitive event of the season. Cheering sections were loud, and the play was intense on all of the courts as finalists battled for the annual championship titles.
In the premiere Women’s 4.5+ match, Hope Prockop, the 2015 national open age champion in both the 40+ and 45+ divisions, took on stand-out Corey Schafer. The games were all close, but Prockop’s experience and relentless game proved the winning formula as she prevailed 3-0.
Another classic battle of youth versus experience was on display in the top-level Open 6.0 division, as the U.S. Junior Open Boys U19 champion and USOC player of the year, Timmy Brownell, took on local professional John Roberts in the final match. Points were closely contested and exhausting to players and spectators alike, and the result of every game hinged on crucial points at 10-8 or 9-9. In the end, Brownell was able to win 3-1 with a two point margin of victory in each of the four games.
