Massachusetts Junior Championships @ Groton, January 3-5, 2014
A major snowstorm materialized the day before the tournament start, necessitating on-the fly adjustments to travel plans. Defaults were surprisingly few, mainly for those who could not fly into Boston. Car travel was at first precarious, then not so as Friday turned sunny and clear. The tournament’s Friday start was delayed two hours which proved to be just right, and the week-end thereafter went on without a hitch. Matches were done by early Sunday afternoon, allowing ample time for trips home.
Draws were restricted to 32 in accordance with rules set forth by US Squash for all Gold tournaments. 200 entrants from the Eastern seaboard and as far west as California and Washington competed in ten divisions, playing some 500 matches in a bit less than 48 hours. Monrad draws enabled almost everyone to play four or five matches to a single finishing spot. Results are below, and some nice photos can be seen here.
