The Deerfield Gold junior tournament took place on the weekend of Nov 29-Dec 1 at Deerfield Academy in in Deerfield, Massachusetts. 222 boys and girls from 16 states and Canada competed on Deerfield’s 10 courts.
Gold tournaments exhibit the highest level of junior competition under the US Squash Junior Championship Tour (JCT) events, with the draws restricted to the top 32 ranked entrants.
“Monrad” draws were used for the tourney, which means more matches per player, and provides each player an exact finishing position. Of course this meant a packed schedule; all 10 courts were in use from early morning to late night. Some 548 matches were played within a space of 48 hours!

While events like this are all about the junior players, this could not have happened without the help of many hands. Thanks to the parents who helped in various ways, including carrying food, transportation for the Squash Haven players, and refereeing assistance: Woo-kyoung Ahn, Carl Bell, Art Bull, Tom Clayton, Jeff Cummings, Don Fox, Amrit Kanwal, Min Lee, David Prockop, Jeff Stanley, Rob Swann, and Kiran Thakker. Thanks to the players who refereed and helped beyond the call of duty: Graham Gozigian, Gabriel Bassil, and Max Novick. Thanks to Deerfield Academy for letting MA Squash use their facility, and thanks to the MA Squash Junior Committee staff: Tom Poor (Director), Morgan Poor, Jessica McMinn, Sarah Cortes, and Dan Reagan. Apologies to anyone we’ve overlooked.
