Top Pro Teams to Play in 2015 Putnam Pro-Am Championships
The very top professional squash doubles players are heading to Boston to play in the 2015 Putnam Pro-Am Championships at The University Club. All of the top six pros–and nine of the top fourteen–are entered. Heading the field is the top duo of Damien Mudge and Ben Gould. They will face some very stiff competition in the teams of Manek Mathur/Yvain Badan and John Russell/Clive Leach, not to mention many others. In all, 30 pros are entered for the event.
The tournament runs from Wednesday, January 7 through Sunday, January 11. Along with the pro division, which features a $30,000 purse, is the pro-am division, in which local players team up with the pros, playing in a star format which guarantees each amateur at least three matches. The scoring system in the pro-am matches includes a sliding scale between games; hence matches typically go late into the fifth game. This division has been described as the tournament that’s “tough to get out of“!
A host of social events are included in the weekend’s festivities. The Putnam Pro-Am is considered a highlight of the squash season for both the professionals and the city’s doubles aficionados. This year marks the 24th consecutive year that the University Club has hosted a professional doubles event.
